Full name ISO 22000 Food safety management systems, the ISO 22000 quality management system is a standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) with a focus on food safety. This standard is related to and complements the ISO 9000 standard.
Food safety is related to the presence of food safety hazards when consuming products. They can occur at any stage of the food chain, so it is imperative that appropriate controls are set in place throughout the entire food chain.
The Food Chain
A food chain is the sequence of stages and activities related to the production, processing, distribution, storage and use of food and its ingredients, from preliminary processing to consumption.
Organizations in the food chain can range from feed manufacturers and food processors, conservators, transporters, and subcontractors to distributors and retail locations (together with relevant organizations such as equipment manufacturer, packaging materials, cleaning services, ingredients and additives).
The ISO 22000 Standard
This document specifies requirements for a food safety management system (FSMS) to enable an organization that is directly or indirectly involved in the food chain:
a) to plan, implement, operate, maintain and update a FSMS providing products and services that are safe, in accordance with their intended use;
b) to demonstrate compliance with applicable statutory and regulatory food safety requirements;
c) to evaluate and assess mutually agreed customer food safety requirements and to demonstrate conformity with them;
d) to effectively communicate food safety issues to interested parties within the food chain;
e) to ensure that the organization conforms to its stated food safety policy;
f) to demonstrate conformity to relevant interested parties;
g) to seek certification or registration of its FSMS by an external organization, or make a self-assessment or self-declaration of conformity to this document.
The most current revision of the ISO 22000 standard is the ISO 22000:2018, published and corrected in June & November 2018. The equivalent national standard in Vietnam is TCVN ISO 22000: 2018.
